For most of us, shopping for a piano is more complicated than it needs to be. On top of that, you may even have to decide if you need piano covers to protect the piano keyboard. However, the most important thing to know is the piano measurements before you embark on your piano playing days.
The piano size is often one of the main points of confusion for most shoppers. Making the right decision about piano size can make all the difference in how well your instrument will function and sound. If you are considering purchasing a smaller piano, remember that they may sound tinny and provide less resonance than bigger pianos. If you are looking for more power and resonance, then a bigger instrument may be the right choice for you.
The size of the piano is also important because it determines how much space it will take up in your home apart from affecting how well it will sound. For example, a grand piano needs more space than an upright one.
A grand piano is a key instrument in a concert hall while the baby grand piano is the most popular type of piano for home use. The size of a grand piano will depend on what kind of music you are playing. There are different sizes for different styles like jazz, classical or pop. The height and width will also affect how much space it takes up in your home. The average grand piano dimensions are 4’6” to 9’5” (length) and 4’11” (width). On the other hand, the average baby grand piano dimensions are 4’6” (length) and 4’0” (width).
Vertical or upright pianos are usually smaller than the grand piano. There are many sizes for vertical pianos. They are classified by the height of the piano. The height, in inches, is determined by subtracting the distance between the floor and the top of the piano from its width in inches. For example, a 48" wide instrument with a height of 70" would be classified as an 8'8" or 9'0" instrument.
The height is also determined by whether or not it has an overstrung scale (the strings are set above the piano keys). If it is overstrung, it will have more strings per inch which means that there is more space between each key for them to fit - most often they are 10 to 12 inches apart. If it isn't overstrung, they are only 8 to 10 inches apart with smaller space between each key.
The steps to measure a piano with a tape measure and/or ruler are as follow:
1. Measure the length of the piano from the front to the back of the piano.
2.Measure the width of the piano from one corner of the piano to the other
3. Find the height of your piano by measuring from the base of your instrument to the top of the strings (this is more accurate than measuring from the ground to the top).
4. Find out what kind of tuning system your piano uses and measure that distance (in inches) from string to string - this is called "string height."
